15 Unplugged Toys for Baby Boys (for less than $60)

Henry's 1st birthday is approaching quickly, so in efforts to keep him as unplugged as possible (and help the slew of grandparents with ideas) I compiled a list of toys that might remind you of your childhood.  You know, before iPad apps were baby's all-encompassing toy.

The American Association of Pediatrics recommends to completely avoid media use for children under 2.  This is almost impossible for a typical household, and I would lie if I said our morning Sesame Street time hasn't saved my sanity a time or two.

We play with pots and pans, Tupperware, and cardboard boxes like you do with your baby.  But, some times it's nice to pull out the toy box and let them go crazy without a plastic toy singing back to you for an hour.  Besides, babies love to explore on their own and have quite a curious imagination!

Note:  I purposely chose not to add books to this list, since that is a whole other topic.

Happy playing!

10 Things to do With Your Baby in Oklahoma - Summer Edition

I don't sit well.  When finding days when it's just the two of us, I know that a plan to explore does us both good.  And as a first-time mom with an infant son, I'm always asking fellow mommas and friends about activities they do to keep their little one stimulated and them out of the house.  So, some times it's nice to mix up the mommy play dates and quiet time at home.  Here's a compiled list of activites to keep you, and your little one, busy in Oklahoma this summer.
    1. The Classics
    2. It's Better When It's Free
    3. Keep Them Active
    4. Learn & Play
    5. Explore Native American Culture
    6. Picnic & Hike At a Local Lake
    7. Events at Myriad Botanical Gardens
    8. Explore Your City
    9. Mommy-and-Me Swim Classes At Your Local City Pool
    10. Family-Friendly Festivals

Preparing for Baby - Easy Budgeting Tips

Since it is the season of babies, I wanted to share some tips that I learned from other mommies that worked wonderfully.

1.  Every time you go to the grocery store during your pregnancy, buy a box of diapers and wipes.  Tape the receipts to the boxes, so if you need a different brand or size once baby comes along, you can easily exchange it for the right one.  I did this for almost every grocery store visit, and I haven't had the need to buy diapers or wipes for Henry yet.  He is 9 months old next week.  (This also save the hassle of trying to budget for diapers.  You can use this extra padding in your budget to buy other baby necessities, like formula, clothing, or baby food.)

2.  Shop end-of-season clearance sales to stock up on the next year.  This can get tricky since you have to guess sizing for the following months, but it never hurts to buy bigger.  I've found that some stores have awesome deals for inventory they're trying to push.  (In-store clearances tend to have better deals than online, since they need to push the inventory for "real-estate" space in the store.)

3.  Request baby books at your shower instead of cards, with  a personal note in the front cover.  Many books can be purchased for cheap prices at dollar stores, Wal-Mart, Target, used books stores, or many of the above listed stores in the baby section.  This way the cards won't be lost in storage, and your child will have a lifetime reminder of the wonderful people who loved him before he was even born.

4.  Gather all of you mom friends together (or find new ones with play date, church, or La Leche League groups) for a co-op.  Trading gently used clothing and toys for babysitting time, other needed items, homemade gifts etc.  I've used a few photography sessions to trade for baby clothes, toys, and babysitting time!  (It's a great currency.)  Items can be easily cycled to maximize its life, and you have a great built-in support group.

Congrats on your addition and may it be the beginning of your happily ever after.

How to Get a Squirmy Baby to Smile for the Camera

Let me start by saying that Henry is an awesome baby.  He's super cuddly, loves attention, and is very curious.  In that order.  So, when I wanted to update his 7 month photos for his fan club, I had to pull a few tricks up my sleeve.

1.  Do it after a nap.  Whether you're just wanting to take a few snapshots for your husband, scheduling for a professional photo shoot, or in your back yard, do it soon after his/her nap time.  I find they are most rested and relaxed during this time.  I tend to wait until after Henry's big afternoon nap, and luckily this is during the golden hour.

2.  Full tummy + dry bum = happy baby.  Take snacks with you, like the Gerber Puffs.  They're low on the mess and can stall a squirmy baby.

3.  Bring his/her favorite toys for distraction.  (We were playing peek-a-boo to get these photos.  Bring your arsenal of activities or toys that you know make cute giggles.  Bubbles are a great last resort, and look lovely in photos.)

4.  Make it a fun activity.  We went on a mile walk to this clearing.  He loves being outside, and was content when I had to sit him down by himself.

5.  Know when it's time to try again.  I tried to do his 5 month photos in one setting, and it was a disaster.  He just wanted to cuddle and breastfeed.  Even though I did everything I could, it was time to postpone it until later.  I've had moms call me in a panic about rescheduling family sessions because little bit is cranky, grumpy, overtired, or just not having it today.  It's understandable, and both you and your photographer would rather get great photos than force a crying little one to look at the camera.  Just remember if you're working with a professional to be as courteous as possible, give her enough notice as her policy states, as well as reschedule dates that will work.
